virtual events

Per recommendations from the Minnesota Conference of the United Methodist Church and the Bishop, all in-person group meetings have been postponed. Hennepin Avenue UMC is committed to being a supportive presence in the lives of our community.
We are determined to stay connected with you, our Hennepin community; below, find many NEW ways to be a community together virtually.  Hennepin is always considering new options for ways that we might safely gather. We are open to suggestions, so please share any and all ideas that you have:

A New World: Virtual Seminar
July 27–30
As a part of Hennepin’s work to become an anti-racist congregation, we are offering a unique experience for youth and adults to participate in a four-morning virtual social justice seminar.
Door Network, partner for our now-cancelled youth mission trip to Chicago, is offering an online seminar full of conversation and inspiration to fuel our social justice work. We’ll gather virtually the mornings of Monday, July 27, through Thursday, July 30, from 9 to 11:45am.
Many topics related to social justice will be discussed and we will explore how these issues have impacted the lives of people of color in Chicago, where Door Network is doing mission work. These conversations will help us better understand the issues facing people of color in the Twin Cities.
We will also have the opportunity to put together a campaign to benefit a local charity doing work to dismantle systemic racism in Minneapolis.
Register online here, and we will email you the details for joining the sessions. Those signing up for this event are encouraged to participate in all four mornings of conversation.

Sponsor a Child!
Due by July 30
Hennepin Avenue UMC supports the work of OC Ministries of the MN Annual Conference in Baiwalla, Sierra Leone. This comprehensive effort includes developing a school, a farm and several income generating micro-businesses. Last year, Hennepin members sponsored 160 elementary school children–funding tuition, uniforms, meals, and supplies.
In this, the third year of our collaboration towards this vital ministry, there are three options for sponsorship:
• Sponsor an elementary student for $150
• Sponsor a secondary student for $300 (available as a $25 per month option)
• Donations of any amount to a general fund to be used as needed for student fees or operating expenses
In just a few clicks, you can sponsor a student or make a donation online

Confront Implicit Bias: Take an Online Course

In our work for racial justice, we must confront the ways that racism is woven into our culture, our institutions, and even our own psyches.

“Implicit Bias: What We Don’t Think We Think” is an online course created by The United Methodist General Commission on Religion and Race for anyone interested in learning and teaching others about implicit bias.

Share this link with family, friends, neighbors, coworkers–and commit yourself to learning more about how implicit bias perpetuates racial injustice.
