SUMMARY:Coffee with Christy
DESCRIPTION:Select Saturdays (once a month) | 10-11am | Longfellow Room \n\n\n\nEnjoy coffee\, connections\, and contemplation with Rev. Christy Key our new Executive Pastor! \n\n\n\nThis monthly gathering offers a quiet\, grounded space to pause\, listen\, and reconnect with God and one another. Each session will introduce a gentle spiritual practice drawn from Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton—such as reflection\, guided silence\, or Lectio Divina—creating room to notice our longings and attend to God’s presence. No prior experience is needed; all are welcome. \n\n\n\nStructure & Flow: Each gathering stands on its own\, so participants are welcome to drop in at any point\, though regular attendance may deepen the experience over time. Sessions are lightly guided rather than discussion-heavy\, centered on scripture and contemplative prayer practices rather than open conversation or debate. Expect a calm\, reflective atmosphere with space for silence\, personal reflection\, and prayer.

SUMMARY:HAUMC is Invited to the 2026 3rd Annual Powwow
DESCRIPTION:Hennepin Church is starting to connect with Native Americans through the Land Acknowledgement Process.By Ann Carlson \n\n\n\nClick here to view the Powwow Poster Invite! \n\n\n\nThe White Earth Nation\, part of the Anishinaabe Nation\, is inviting Hennepin Church membersto a Powwow on May 16 at the American Indian Center\, located at 1530 Franklin Ave.\, Minneapolis. The grand entry dance kicks off between 12 and 4 PM\, followed by a feast from 4 to 6 PM. This invitation marks the beginning of a journey for Hennepin Church people and White Earth Native Americans to forge relationships and explore ways to work together. \n\n\n\nWhy is collaboration so important? It’s because there’s still much to be done between Christian Churches and Native American Communities. This unfinished business dates back to the early days of European settlement in America\, when Europeans sought to colonize and profit from the land’s resources. The “Doctrine of Discovery\,” a papal decree\, declared lands not inhabited by Christians as “uninhabited\,” allowing them to be seized. This led to centuries of land theft\, cultural destruction\, and the enslavement of indigenous peoples by European colonists. The Doctrine of Discovery has resulted in centuries of impoverishment and discrimination against Native peoples\, issues that have largely not been resolved. \n\n\n\nAbout a year ago\, Hennepin Church formed a Land Acknowledgement Committee to begin learning about Native American History and crafting a Land Acknowledgement statement that acknowledges the harm caused to Native Peoples by Christian Churches and the United States Government. Members of Hennepin Church offered several classes on Native American Issues and a Sacred Site tour. The Land Acknowledgement Committee is now working on writing a Land Acknowledgement Statement for Hennepin Church and determining how Hennepin Church members can build relationships with Native Communities. To achieve this\, a group of Hennepin members met with the mental health and chemical dependency treatment staff at the White Earth Nation program\, which is located across the street from Hennepin Church. During the initial meeting\, we discussed Hennepin Church members’ intention to support White Earth Nation’s programming and explore potential partnerships. The next step is to host a potluck dinner at Hennepin Church with the White Earth Nation to get to know each other better and brainstorm ideas for collaboration. \n\n\n\nPlease attend the Powwow at the American Indian Center on May 16 from 12:00-6:00! Keep posted about a date for the potluck dinner between Hennepin Church members and White Earth Nation people.

Sermons explore the intersection of historical texts and current realities. Our excellent music program launches soul through choral and communal song. Children lead in worship\, we sing varieties of hymns meant to engage hearts and imaginations\, and our cathedral sanctuary bears witness to an enduring desire to praise God in all ways. In the United Methodist Church\, communion is open to all and is shared on the first Sunday of the month. Worship is enriched by a variety of voices\, including our pastors\, Rev. Elizabeth Macaulay and Rev. Christy Key\, along with guest preachers and members of the community.

DESCRIPTION:A healing and reflective space for ex-evangelicals. \n\n\n\nMany people carry deep grief and heartache after deconstructing their faith — especially those who come from evangelical backgrounds marked by rigid or harmful theology. This small group is a gentle\, supportive space for those navigating that journey. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we will tend the grief of lost community\, name the wounds left by dangerous theology\, and seek healing\, honesty\, and belonging in the presence of God and one another. \n\n\n\nSundays | 11:15am-12:15pm | Room 106April 19 | May 17

SUMMARY:Monthly Hennepin Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Hennepin Book Club meets every third Thursday on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Painted Drum by Louise Erdrich \n\n\n\nFrom the author of the National Book Award Winner The Round House\, Louise Erdrich’s breathtaking\, lyrical novel of a priceless Ojibwe artifact and the effect it has had on those who have come into contact with it over the years. \n\n\n\nWhile appraising the estate of a New Hampshire family descended from a North Dakota Indian agent\, Faye Travers is startled to discover a rare moose skin and cedar drum fashioned long ago by an Ojibwe artisan. And so begins an illuminating journey both backward and forward in time\, following the strange passage of a powerful yet delicate instrument\, and revealing the extraordinary lives it has touched and defined. \n\n\n\nCompelling and unforgettable\, Louise Erdrich’s Painted Drum explores the often-fraught relationship between mothers and daughters\, the strength of family\, and the intricate rhythms of grief with all the grace\, wit\, and startling beauty that characterizes this acclaimed author’s finest work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you enjoy reading\, please join the Hennepin Avenue UMC community for an hour-long discussion via Zoom about this book! \n\n\n\nThe books can be read online through local libraries or inexpensive websites like thriftbooks.com. \n\n\n\nFeel free to invite your reading friends! \n\n\n\nIf you are interested to get on the mailing list or have any questions\, please reach out to Jane Mylrea (janecmylrea@yahoo.com). \n\n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 898 0983 7941Passcode: 496102
