SUMMARY:10am Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:EXPERIENCE THE JOY\, EXCITEMENT\, AND MAJESTY OF THE 10AM WORSHIP SERVICE.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipate Online on Website\n\n\n\nParticipate on Youtube\n\n\n\nParticipate on Facebook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt Hennepin Avenue UMC we believe that worship is the work of the people. Sermons explore the intersection of historical texts and current realities. Our excellent music program launches soul through choral and communal song. Children lead in worship\, we sing varieties of hymns meant to engage hearts and imaginations\, and our cathedral sanctuary bears witness to an enduring desire to praise God in all ways. In the United Methodist Church\, communion is open to all and is shared on the first Sunday of the month. Worship is enriched by a variety of voices\, including our pastors\, Rev. Elizabeth Macaulay and Pastor Laura Hannah\, along with guest preachers and members of the community.

SUMMARY:Faith's Imagination with Rev. Dr. Nancy Victorin-Vangerud
DESCRIPTION:Join the Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSundays 9-9:50am (starting September 7) in the Longfellow Room \n\n\n\nBy gathering before worship\, we connect with care and conversation\, preparing ourselves to enter into celebration. We ground ourselves with thoughtful questions\, seeking to re-imagine Christian meaning and embodied paths of spiritual practice. Sometimes our focus is a scripture series\, a timely book\, poetry\, or an all-church read.   \n\n\n\nThemes that speak to us are social and environmental justice\, democratic pluralism\, inclusive communities\, and reparative futures.  And… there’s coffee!  For more info\, email Nancy Victorin-Vangerud (nmvicvang@gmail.com). \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83864480520?pwd=wIS3JRiBF5VLul1dkLUdh8YzFQtYHU.1 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSun Day Event Details Here\n\n\n\n\nJoin us in September! Here Comes the Sun! \n\n\n\nJoin us in learning about the National Sun Day\, September 21st\, with the writings of activist and environmentalist Bill McKibben (he’s also UMC). He’s part of the national celebration of solar energy\, which has become the energy for the future. China and Texas have become huge solar energy leaders – solar power also connects with an empowering and compassionate eco-spirituality\, which we’ll explore through selected biblical texts. \n\n\n\nBill’s new book\, Here Comes the Sun\, will provide a chapter for us\, too. Please join the group study for 4 weeks (all September)\, and plan to attend the Minneapolis Sun Day festivities on September 21 from 1-4pm at Graco Park\, as we collaborate with MNIPL\, Third Act\, and other local orgs.

SUMMARY:Friday Coffee and Connection with Pastor Elizabeth
DESCRIPTION:Join the Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Pastor Elizabeth for a weekly time of sharing conversation\, coffee\, and topical study. \n\n\n\nCome join us for an opportunity to find your unique path to spiritual growth led by Pastor Elizabeth.  \n\n\n\nFriday mornings we meet in the Longfellow Room from 10:00 – 11:15. There is coffee and a fine group of humans to enjoy. \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88019904564?pwd=14KrqqzBCcIU0i60dbtqpI5N9z4dae.1 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 880 1990 4564Passcode: 344849 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOriginal Blessing by Matthew Fox \n\n\n\nIn this book Matthew Fox lays out a whole new direction for Christianity—a direction that is in fact very ancient and very grounded in Jewish thinking (the fact that Jesus was a Jew is often neglected by Christian theology). Fox believes that the teaching of original sin—which Jesus never heard of (no Jew has) has served empire-builders very well but that original blessing—the awareness of the goodness of creation—must take precedence.  The implications are profound for psychological as well as sociological and ecological transformation.  Oppressed people everywhere will recognize the difference.   \n\n\n\nFox lays out the ancient but often neglected (and sometimes condemned) creation spiritual tradition in Original Blessing.  The sacredness of creation and of our role in it is a starting point—what the mystical tradition calls the Via Positiva\, the path of joy and delight\, awe and gratitude.  The Via Negativa is the path of darkness and silence and also of suffering and of letting go and letting be.  The Via Creativa is the path of creativity.  And the Via Transformativa is the path of justice and compassion.  All four paths constitute an adult spiritual journey.  Each feeds the others.   \n\n\n\nFox also lays out 27 themes that interweave among the Four Paths.  For Fox\, all of us are mystics and all are prophets\, and he shows the journey of both in this groundbreaking and revolutionary book that deliberately rejects the 3 paths of purgation\, illumination and union that fail to put justice or creativity at the heart of the spiritual journey.  In this revolutionary work\, Fox shows how Christianity once celebrated beauty\, compassion\, justice\, and creativity and provided a path of ecstatic connection with all creation.

SUMMARY:Monthly Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Time of the Child by Niall Williams \n\n\n\nFrom the author of This Is Happiness\, a compassionate\, life-affirming novel about the Christmas season that transforms the small Irish town of Faha. \n\n\n\nDoctor Jack Troy was born and raised in Faha\, but his responsibilities for the sick and his care for the dying mean he has always been set apart from the town. His eldest daughter\, Ronnie\, has grown up in her father’s shadow\, and remains there\, having missed one chance at love – and passed up another offer of marriage from an unsuitable man. \n\n\n\nBut in the Advent season of 1962\, as the town readies itself for Christmas\, Ronnie and Doctor Troy’s lives are turned upside down when a baby is left in their care. As the winter passes\, father and daughter’s lives\, the understanding of their family\, and their role in their community are changed forever. \n\n\n\nSet over the course of one December in the same village as Williams’ beloved This Is Happiness\, Time of the Child is a tender return to Faha for readers who know its charms\, and a heartwarming welcome to new readers entering for the very first time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you enjoy reading\, please join the Hennepin Avenue UMC community for an hour-long discussion via Zoom about this book! \n\n\n\nThe books can be read online through local libraries or inexpensive websites like thriftbooks.com. \n\n\n\nFeel free to invite your reading friends! \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting:Meeting ID: 898 0983 7941Passcode: 496102 \n\n\n\nEmail Jane Mylrea if you are interested to get on the mailing list!

SUMMARY:Confirmation Class
DESCRIPTION:Sundays 11:15-12:30 in the Church of Youth \n\n\n\nConfirmation is a vital ministry where youth are supported throughout their spiritual  \n\n\n\njourney. The program encourages students to connect with God\, the Bible\, the Church\, and caring adults.  Participants may join a confirmation class anytime between their 8th grade year and their senior year of high school.  \n\n\n\nStudent learning will center around classroom time\, hands-on service activities\, field trips\, and yearly summer mission trips. Students are expected to attend regularly\, participate in worship\, complete service hours and meet with mentors. Their final activity will be the creation of their own faith statement prior to the rite of confirmation in worship. For more info\, email Lynne Carroll (lynne@haumc.org).
