SUMMARY:Faith's Imagination with Rev. Dr. Nancy Victorin-Vangerud
DESCRIPTION:Join the Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSundays 9-9:50am (starting January 11) in the Longfellow Room \n\n\n\nBy gathering before worship\, we connect with care and conversation\, preparing ourselves to enter into celebration. We ground ourselves with thoughtful questions\, seeking to re-imagine Christian meaning and embodied paths of spiritual practice. Sometimes our focus is a scripture series\, a timely book\, poetry\, or an all-church read.   \n\n\n\nThemes that speak to us are social and environmental justice\, democratic pluralism\, inclusive communities\, and reparative futures.  And… there’s coffee!  For more info\, email Nancy Victorin-Vangerud (nmvicvang@gmail.com). \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83864480520?pwd=wIS3JRiBF5VLul1dkLUdh8YzFQtYHU.1 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 838 6448 0520Passcode: 054671 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2026\, we’ll be exploring historic and contemporary personal letters to shape spirituality calling us for our time: \n\n\n\nWinter Jan 11 – Feb 15: “When We Are Called to Dissent and Resist\,” based on the letters of Lt. Silas Soule\, who refused to follow orders and participate in the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre\, Colorado. \n\n\n\nLent Feb 22 – April 5: “Letters from the Heart: Voices of Courage\, Conscience and Consolation\,” starting with Paul (2 Cor. 3:2-3)\, we’ll explore letters (and the lives of the letter-writers) from clergy and lay leaders influential in Christian spirituality–Hadejwich\, Martin Luther\, Sarah Crosby\, Dietrich Bonhoeffer\, Martin Luther King Jr.\, and Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde. \n\n\n\nSpring April 12 – May 17: “Letters to Pope Francis: Rebuilding a Church with Justice and Compassion”\, by Matthew Fox\, as we prepare for his Earth Sunday visit with HAUMC! We’ll explore Fox’s letters for the sake of the Community of Creation. \n\n\n\nClass is led by Nancy Victorin-Vangerud\, participants\, and guests. Feel free to email Nancy for more information and sign up\, so that weekly letters can be sent by email. \n\n\n\nFor January Communications: Witness at Sand Creek: The Life and Letters of Silas Soule

SUMMARY:10am Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:EXPERIENCE THE JOY\, EXCITEMENT\, AND MAJESTY OF THE 10AM WORSHIP SERVICE.\n\n\n\n\nParticipate Online on Website\n\n\n\nParticipate on Youtube\n\n\n\nParticipate on Facebook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt Hennepin Avenue UMC we believe that worship is the work of the people. Sermons explore the intersection of historical texts and current realities. Our excellent music program launches soul through choral and communal song. Children lead in worship\, we sing varieties of hymns meant to engage hearts and imaginations\, and our cathedral sanctuary bears witness to an enduring desire to praise God in all ways. In the United Methodist Church\, communion is open to all and is shared on the first Sunday of the month. Worship is enriched by a variety of voices\, including our pastors\, Rev. Elizabeth Macaulay and Rev. Christy Key\, along with guest preachers and members of the community.

SUMMARY:Land Acknowledgement Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Join our meeting over Zoom on the second Mondays of each month! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHennepin’s Creation Collective and Racial Justice Teams have been collaborating to develop a land acknowledgment statement and actions for our church. We invite all groups and individual members of HAUMC to join this conversation. We invite each of you into this meaningful\, long-term journey to create your own land acknowledgement. More than just words\, this project is a commitment to relationship-building\, truth-telling\, and reparative action with Indigenous communities in Minnesota.  \n\n\n\nOur monthly meetings on Zoom began Spring 2025. We compiled a list of websites and documents and group members (1) History Statement of Land Acknowledgement and HAUMC and (2) Research for HAUMC Action Plan–available on our group page on Realm.  \n\n\n\nActivities include book studies\, conversations and visits with those in other churches who led land acknowledgement initiatives. We’ve held watch parties online and in person of a video on the Doctrine of Discovery\, and we’ve begun work with consultant Rev Dawn Houser. Thirty persons from HAUMC attended a Sacred Sites tour led by Rev Jim Bear Jacobs in November 2025. \n\n\n\nOur focus is on working through (rather than on behalf of) the rest of the groups in the church and we invited other HAUMC groups to our meetings. Land Acknowledgement activities other groups in the church have organized include the Three Sisters Garden\, Faith’s Imagination winter Series “When We are Called to Dissent and Resist”\, The HAUMC Library’s Native American book display\, a Native American Art Display\, and the Men’s Group winter event: Creation Spirituality: A Night of Readings and Reflections in the Depths. \n\n\n\nLook for an announcement soon about an upcoming six-week Land Acknowledgement Journey that begins Feb 25\, 2026! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Cece Cope\, Tim Eberhart\, Ellen Sundell\, Ann Carlson \n\n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 872 7727 9883Password: 991695

SUMMARY:Monthly Hennepin Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Hennepin Book Club meets every third Thursday on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere Rivers Part by Kao Kalia Yang \n\n\n\nA mesmerizing and hauntingly beautiful memoir about a Hmong family’s epic journey to safety told from the perspective of the author’s incredible mother who survived\, and helped her family escape\, against all odds. \n\n\n\nBorn in 1961 in war-torn Laos\, Tswb’s childhood was marked by the violence of America’s Secret War and the CIA recruitment of the Hmong and other ethnic minorities into the lost cause. By the time Tswb was a teenager\, the US had completely vacated Laos\, and the country erupted into genocidal attacks on the Hmong people\, who were labeled as traitors. Fearing for their lives\, Tswb and her family left everything they knew behind and fled their village for the jungle. \n\n\n\nPerpetually on the run and on the brink of starvation\, Tswb eventually crossed paths with the man who would become her future husband. Leaving her own mother behind\, she joined his family at a refugee camp\, a choice that would haunt her for the rest of her life. Eventually becoming a mother herself\, Tswb raised her daughters in a state of constant fear and hunger until they were able to emigrate to the US\, where the determined couple enrolled in high school even though they were both nearly thirty\, and worked grueling jobs to provide for their children. \n\n\n\nNow\, her daughter\, Kao Kalia Yang\, reveals her mother’s astonishing saga with tenderness and unvarnished clarity\, giving voice to the countless resilient refugees who are often overlooked as one of the essential foundations of this country. Evocative\, stirring\, and unforgettable\, Where Rivers Part is destined to become a classic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf you enjoy reading\, please join the Hennepin Avenue UMC community for an hour-long discussion via Zoom about this book! \n\n\n\nThe books can be read online through local libraries or inexpensive websites like thriftbooks.com. \n\n\n\nFeel free to invite your reading friends! \n\n\n\nIf you are interested to get on the mailing list or have any questions\, please reach out to Jane Mylrea (janecmylrea@yahoo.com). \n\n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 898 0983 7941Passcode: 496102
