SUMMARY:Faith's Imagination with Rev. Dr. Jennifer Harvey
DESCRIPTION:Antiracism as Daily Practice: Refusing Shame\, Changing White Communities\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhite Americans have real power in our relationships with other white folks to grow racial justice. It’s vital we engage with our families\, through our social networks\, in our neighborhoods\, and at our jobs to make antiracism a daily living commitment. Meanwhile these are some of the hardest places to do so. \n\n\n\nWe’re going to talk about why white people struggle with the “what to do?” about racism. We’ll explore the significance of grief and anger—as well as the harmful role of shame. We’ll reckon with the transformation our communities need to become the partners in justice Black communities and other communities of color need and deserve. Such transformation isn’t only vital to the well-being of U.S. democracy\, its vital to the freedom and wholeness of white people too. \n\n\n\nEveryone is affected by how white people show up in the work of racial justice. So\, this is a conversation for all of us. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\n\n\nRev. Dr. Jennifer Harvey is a writer and educator long engaged in racial justice and white antiracism. Her books include the New York Times bestseller Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in Racially Unjust America and Dear White Christians: For Those Still Longing for Racial Reconciliation. Dr. Harvey has written for the New York Times and CNN\, appeared on CNN’s Town Hall on Racism with Sesame Street and Good Morning America\, and has been heard on countless radio programs including NPR’s All Things Considered.” In 2023\, she joined Garrett Seminary to serve as VP for Academic Affairs and Academic Dean after serving at Drake University as a professor of religion and Director of the Crew Scholars program for nearly 20 years. Dr. Harvey is earned her PhD in Christian Ethics from Union Theological Seminary and is ordained in the American Baptist Churches (USA). Her most book\, Antiracism as Daily Practice: Refuse Shame\, Change White Communities and Help Create a Just World was published with St. Martins Press in 2024. Learn more here.

SUMMARY:10am Earth Sunday Worship | Cathedral for All Creation Celebration
DESCRIPTION:EXPERIENCE THE JOY\, EXCITEMENT\, AND MAJESTY OF THE 10AM WORSHIP SERVICE.\n\n\n\nThis is Earth Sunday AND our Cathedral for All Creation Celebration of the Hennepin/Garrett partnership! \n\n\n\n\nParticipate Online on Website\n\n\n\nParticipate on Youtube\n\n\n\nParticipate on Facebook\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAt Hennepin Avenue UMC we believe that worship is the work of the people. Sermons explore the intersection of historical texts and current realities. Our excellent music program launches soul through choral and communal song. Children lead in worship\, we sing varieties of hymns meant to engage hearts and imaginations\, and our cathedral sanctuary bears witness to an enduring desire to praise God in all ways. In the United Methodist Church\, communion is open to all and is shared on the first Sunday of the month. Worship is enriched by a variety of voices\, including our pastors\, Rev. Elizabeth Macaulay and Rev. Christy Key\, along with guest preachers and members of the community.

The program encourages students to connect with God\, the Bible\, the Church\, and caring adults.  Participants may join a confirmation class anytime between their 8th grade year and their senior year of high school.  \n\n\n\nStudent learning will center around classroom time\, hands-on service activities\, field trips\, and yearly summer mission trips. Students are expected to attend regularly\, participate in worship\, complete service hours and meet with mentors. Their final activity will be the creation of their own faith statement prior to the rite of confirmation in worship. For more info\, email Lynne Carroll (lynne@haumc.org).

SUMMARY:Courage\, Integrity\, & Faith in Action: A Fireside Chat with Alan Storey and Kathryn McElveen
DESCRIPTION:Music & Refreshments at 6:30 pm / Program begins at 7:00pmThis event is free & open to the public! \n\n\n\nRegister for this event here! \n\n\n\nWhat are the bells we want our lives to ring? What are the banners we are called to raise? \n\n\n\nJoin Alan Storey\, South African minister\, activist\, and author of The Bell\, Banners\, and Blasphemy\, in conversation with Kathryn McElveen\, Executive Director of the Center for Courage & Renewal\, for an evening exploring what it means to live and act with integrity at a time when moral questions of justice\, truth\, and courage are pressing into our daily lives\, our communities\, and the institutions that shape our lives. \n\n\n\nRooted in decades of ministry and public witness in Cape Town during and after apartheid\, Alan’s work has centered on the question of what happens when faith communities refuse to remain silent in the face of injustice. At the Central Methodist Mission\, Alan helped cultivate a tradition of public moral courage through the church’s “Yellow Banners\,” which boldly spoke to issues of power\, privilege\, and human dignity in the public square. \n\n\n\nDrawing from these experiences and the work stewarded at the Center for Courage & Renewal\, Alan and Kathryn will reflect on the deeper inner and relational work required to live faithfully in a world marked by division and struggle. Together\, they’ll explore questions such as: \n\n\n\n\nHow do we listen for the deeper voice within us that calls us toward truth\, justice\, and compassion?\n\n\n\nWhat habits and practices help individuals and communities cultivate the courage to speak and act when it matters most?\n\n\n\nWhat does it look like for faith communities and people of conscience more broadly to bring their values into public life?\n\n\n\n\nAt its heart\, this evening will be an exploration of how we sustain the posture of love\, truth\, and justice over the long arc of our lives\, and how we nurture the trustworthy relationships and communities that make that possible. \n\n\n\n\n\nRead more below about Alan Storey and Kathryn McElveen! \n\n\n\nAlan StoreyRooted in the South African context … Alan is a Gospel storyteller and facilitator of personal and political change. \n\n\n\nAlan’s commitment to the Jesus way of justice and peace-making was tested early in his life when he faced  conscription into the apartheid regime’s military. He chose to be a conscientious objector. He was arrested and faced trial with a six-year prison sentence as the likely outcome. Alan’s trial was abandoned midway\, and he became the last conscientious objector to be brought to trial in apartheid South Africa. Over the years he has been involved in numerous civil society organizations addressing: gun violence\, racism; state-capture corruption; xenophobia; homophobia; transphobia; spacial apartheid inequality; sex worker discrimination and campaign for a universal basic income. Alan spearheaded the transformation of the Stipend Policy within the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. \n\n\n\nAlan recently retired from serving at the Central Methodist Mission in Cape Town. As a Methodist minister for 33 years who lived off weekly words\, he is now exploring silence and solitude … while writing. Having recently written the 2025 Andrew Murray Desmond Tutu Prize winning The bell\, banners and blasphemy.  \n\n\n\nAlan has a Honors degree in Theology and a Masters in the Philosophy of Applied Business Ethics. He is a recipient of the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award and a fellow of the African Leadership Initiative (part of the Aspen Leadership Institute). \n\n\n\nAlan’s lifelong work remains the experimental practice of the Sermon on the Mount. \n\n\n\nAlan’s hope is to contribute to “heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic values\, social justice and fundamental human rights.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKathryn McElveenKathryn McElveen is the Executive Director of the Center for Courage & Renewal. Her work in public and private nonprofits\, social justice\, leadership formation\, and executive coaching has focused on helping people—and their communities and organizations—integrate their inner and outer lives\, align values and actions\, and cultivate the agency and stamina necessary to sustain meaningful change. Kathryn is an experienced Courage & Renewal facilitator\, committed to expanding access to our approach\, and deepening the understanding and engagement of our principles\, practices\, and values to transform organizational systems and cultures to their most life-giving potential.

SUMMARY:Friday Coffee and Connection with Pastor Elizabeth

But Jesus describes the reign of God as a house with many rooms\, writes Debie Thomas\, one of the most auspicious voices in religious writing today. In this work of sprawling spiritual and literary imagination\, Thomas claims that wherever God dwells\, there is expansiveness and belonging. \n\n\n\nThomas knows what a cramped faith feels like\, what it’s like to wrestle your way out of fundamentalism and toward a more capacious faith. From the diasporic church in which she grew up\, to the disorientations of a deconstructing faith\, to an ample yet orthodox Christianity that makes room for all her identities\, Thomas takes listeners on a deeply personal and profoundly theological odyssey. In A Faith of Many Rooms\, she talks back to jaundiced versions of faith and finds evidence that the gospel insists on its own roominess. \n\n\n\nThe kind of God who decided to experience the world as a guest likely feels constrained by our pinched theologies too. What sorts of ruptures and revisions would it take to find a more spacious faith—and then to inhabit it with authenticity and joy? Fans of Christian Wiman\, Cole Arthur Riley\, and Barbara Brown Taylor will find in this book an ardent\, lyrical take on a faith transfigured.
