A Message from Sally Messner:
Music is healing. Music connects us. It offers us respite from the noises and worries of our lives, yet it is not a retreat from the world—rather, music, especially live music, can strengthen us to meet the world. Our engagement with and participation in beauty inspires us with hope and sustains us for building relationships, forming authentic connections with people around us. We offer the Music at Hennepin series as one place where you can encounter such hope.
The concerts of this 2024-25 season bring some familiar and new sounds to our sanctuary, continuing Hennepin Ave UMC’s tradition of supporting excellent music in concert and in worship. We are delighted to welcome back the musicians and storytellers of A Thousand Tongues to hear music that has shaped artists of Asian American Pacific Islander descent. Our holiday offerings include The Minnesota Boychoir, a Twin Cities staple celebrating its sixty- third season. In the spring our own Sanctuary Choir will join the Chamber Singers of the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus in a program that will encourage us to engage one another with love and respect, seeing in each other our shared humanity.
With these concerts and more, you are most welcome to join us for special worship events, which you can connect to through our online events calendar. In this season you’ll find Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria, J.S. Bach’s Cantata 125, and Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, in addition to abundant music on Christmas Eve and Easter.
We are also pleased to welcome back Salon se Lève, a monthly performance series that presents, supports, and encourages Minnesota’s most gifted emerging young artists. This series is partially sponsored by memorial donations from the family and friends of Janice Derksen, a former Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church musician, and is a fitting way to honor her service to the church. Use the events QR code in this booklet to see all Salon see Lève dates.
Hennepin seeks to grow in love to heal a broken world. Whether as participant or listener, we invite you into this journey with us. We present our concerts with low ticket prices or freewill offerings so that cost is not a barrier. Visit our events webpage for details on ticket prices and scholarship information.
So come—encounter hope, share beauty, form connections. All are welcome. Always.
