The Dignity Center
The Dignity Center is an interfaith outreach ministry of Hennepin Avenue UMC. We are a learning site for students of all ages to experience hands-on learning in social service ministry.
We welcome and support people in poverty on their path to stability. We define stability as safe housing and an income to support it. We believe that it is through relationship that transformation happens and it is through accountable relationships that progress is made to overcome the obstacles to stability.

Community Meals
For over 20 years, Hennepin Avenue UMC has been part of a downtown church consortium committed to providing a hot meal on Sunday evenings to low income and homeless people. 40-50 volunteers welcome 225-450 guests to a delicious dinner on the first and fifth Sunday of each month. In addition to dinner, guests receive shelf-stable pantry items, toiletries, socks and underwear, while University of Minnesota vet students provide free vaccines and care for guest’s pets.
Volunteers of all ages find fun, fulfilling work. You don’t need to be a church member to volunteer. All are welcome.
Ending Homelessness
The Ending Homelessness Education & Advocacy Team (EHEAT) is dedicated to advocating for the elimination of homelessness in our community. Connected with the Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness (DCEH), the role of the team is to plan and implement education and advocacy programs, projects, and actions within the Hennepin Avenue UMC community, to support the effort to end homelessness.
We encourage all who want to create a more just community for our brothers and sisters, to join our Team.

Meals on Wheels
Delivering Meals on Wheels is a tradition at Hennepin Avenue UMC. More than thirty years ago Hennepin joined other downtown churches in forming the Loring-Nicollet Meals on Wheels.
We deliver a hot noon meal to elderly or handicapped people five days a week. Our territory is downtown Minneapolis. Hennepin’s delivery day is Friday, and we need five drivers every week.
It is gratifying to receive smiles and thank yous from people who really need this meal. An hour of your time brings you the gratitude of 8-10 people. One driver said, “This is the most fun you can have on a Friday morning”!
You are invited to join us. Ride along with an experienced driver and check us out.

Refugee Services
Hennepin Avenue UMC is a partner congregation in the MCC Refugee Services. We are called into action periodically as new families relocate to the Twin Cities.
Refugee Services became a program of the Minnesota Council of Churches (MCC) in 1985. Since that time, MCC Refugee Services has welcomed more than 6,000 refugees from around the world to lives of freedom, hope, and opportunity in Minnesota. It provides specialized services for refugees and asylees to assist them on the path to self-sufficiency and support them as they work towards achieving their dreams.
MCC Refugees Services strives to provide excellent, holistic, family-centered services that provide abundant support to refugees and their families and it offers abundant support to identified families by finding transportation, places to stay, household items, and clothing needs.
Street Song
Street Song MN is an exciting new choir which aims to unite voices for harmony and community. Comprised of persons ‘experienced’ in homelessness–i.e. persons currently or formerly homeless, and those who care about them–StreetSong is led by Teri Larson, Music Director of the Basilica of St Mary. This choral collaborative is an enterprise of the Downtown Congregations to End Homelessness (DCEH).
StreetSong draws on the experiences, hopes, and aspirations of its members to produce a choral experience promoting personal fulfillment and the development of community. A meal is available prior to rehearsal, and bus tokens are provided to remove any financial obstacle which may be a deterrent to participation. Rehearsals take place on Mondays at Central Lutheran Church from 12-1 pm, just after the community meal. Come Sing with Us!
Through its music, StreetSong MN presents an opportunity for engagement in the cause of ending homelessness. The choir has appeared at the DCEH’s Unite to End Homelessness events, the Central Library in downtown Minneapolis, the Mall of America as part of its Holiday Music Festival, the annual Homeless Memorial March and Service and at various churches and mosque. In April 2016, StreetSong MN performed with the award-winning vocal ensemble Cantus at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
You can support a StreetSong member by contributing $40 to provide a choir t-shirt and transportation costs. If you love to sing and would love to be a part of this novel experience, please contact Mark Squire.
