Written by Adele Dahm, Director of Marketing & Communications

Today, we say goodbye to someone who has been an absolutely essential part of the Communications team: James Butler, our Marketing & Communications Manager, is stepping away from his role at Hennepin to pursue a full-time opportunity in video production.
James joined our team in August of 2023, courageously shifting from a career in engineering to explore a more creative path. He came to Hennepin with a deep desire to grow, to tell stories, and to be part of an organization rooted in inclusion and authenticity—and he brought all of that and so much more.
In our time working together, James has been a steady, kind, quietly brilliant force behind so much of what we do. When I transitioned into the Director role last spring, James didn’t just hold the day-to-day work together—he elevated it. He took on huge responsibilities with grace, care, and excellence. Whether it was learning new software on the fly, experimenting with content strategies, refining how we present ourselves visually, or capturing the spirit of our community through photos and video—James always showed up with thoughtfulness, talent, and kindness. He is endlessly curious, deeply collaborative, and probably the most humble person I know.

One of the best parts of working with James has been the way we balanced each other—I bring an elevated energy, and he brings the calm. He’s been a creative partner, sounding board, and someone I could always trust to bring an idea to life with care and heart. We’ve tested all kinds of silly and serious ideas together, and it’s been such a joy to create alongside him.
James is stepping into a new chapter now—one that allows him to fully lean into his love for video and storytelling. I’m so excited for him and proud of the boldness it takes to keep pursuing your passion. His next team is lucky beyond measure.
James, thank you for everything you’ve brought to this place, to our work, and to my life. You will be so deeply missed. I hope you all will join me in expressing gratitude and well wishes to James.
