You can’t know where you are going until you know where you have been.

In 2025, Hennepin Church celebrated 150 years of worship, community and transformation. From October 2024 through October 2025 church member Phil Wala wrote a weekly blog about the events occurring in that week in our church history. With historical photos and newspaper articles, and links to historical videos and sermon recordings he brought the past back to life. In addition, we prepared slideshows for the final celebration and church member Ann Carlson produced two videos about the Outreach programs that have been supported over the years. Following is an index of links to individual blogs and presentations which span the decades. You are welcome to dive in and learn more about our first 150 years!
The Church has also published a book titled Aspire! – 150 Years at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church

Written by church members Lori Sturdevant and Bobbie Keller with research by Phil Wala, it chronicles the history of the church from its origin as a splinter congregation within the Minneapolis Methodist community through the first hundred and fifty years of growth, decline and renewal. From the spirited revivals and temperance lectures of the late 1800s to the challenges of a global pandemic, it’s the story of how the people of one church were touched by the social, political and religious times in which they lived, and how they, in turn, continued to practice their faith, working to enhance their community and the wider world around them. The book is available for purchase at the Front Desk.

This book was also selected as one of three finalists in the History category for the Midwest Book Awards 2026, where it won Honorable Mention!
